16th VURSC Board Agenda_ 9.21.20.pdf

Valley Unified is dedicated to keeping our students and families updated on our school reintegration process. We will therefore provide a weekly update as we bring students back to in-classroom learning, and manage remote learning needs at the same time. Each weekly update will focus on the updates and information specific to health and wellness of our students and staff, in addition to new information we receive from the Department of Education.

We appreciate all the help and support each of you have extended to us during this transition. Valley Unified Schools are blessed to be able to return to school safely while there is no/low community spread of COVID-19.

Valley Unified Calendar Adjustment

Posted by Superintendent of Schools / Executive Director on August 14, 2020

In order for our schools to open safely, we want to ensure that all the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) is available for our staff and students. Additionally, we need to ensure that all safety measures, including temperature screening tools, floor signage, and informational displays are in place. Finally, we still need all parents/guardians to complete a school enrollment form for their children, so we know if they are coming back to in-classroom instruction or if they will be participating in remote learning to start the year. School enrollment forms are available at

Because all of the above measures have not been finalized, Valley Unified Schools, including MSAD27, MSAD33, and the Madawaska School Department have delayed the start of the school year by one week. All 7-12 students will be now starting on August 27 and all K-6 students will be starting on September 10. The preK start remains the same, beginning on September 21. Please click the calendar below for the most recent version, dated 8.13.20.

We thank you for your understanding as we prepare for a safe return to school.

2020-21 Approved Calendar 8.13.20.pdf

The Valley Unified Regional Education Center has created four planning teams to develop a road map and timeline for a safe and efficient return to school for students and staff from MSAD #27, MSAD #33, and the Madawaska School Department for the 2020-2021 school year.

Each planning team will consider multiple possibilities and formats in order to develop a flexible, fluid plan that can be quickly adjusted to ensure our schools, students, staff, families, and communities remain safe and that teaching and learning continue as local, regional, and state developments take place relative to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Guidance from the Governor's office, the Maine Department of Education, and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention will guide our progress through each phase of the plan.

On-going communication with health and safety professionals, school staff, students, parents, families, and community members will be a critical part of the on-going planning process.

Information and notifications concerning each phase of the plan will be sent through SwiftReach and will appear here, on the Valley Unified Facebook page, and on both school and school unit websites and social media pages as steps are finalized.

Dear Valley Unified Parents, Guardians, Staff Members, and Students,

A revised current (2019-20) school year calendar has been approved by the Madawaska School Committee, the MSAD27 Board of Directors, and the MSAD33 Board of Directors. This calendar revision has a final student school day as June 5, 2020. This will be the final day of the 2019-20 school year and our current remote learning plan.

Our educators will be working the week of June 8 and June 15 on plans to refine and improve remote learning plans, should we need to implement them again in the future. Soon, you will receive a survey about remote learning, specific to what we have done well and what we need to improve upon. We appreciate the feedback as we look to improve the remote learning experience for all involved.

Finally, plans are currently underway for summer school offerings. The method of summer school delivery is contingent on the Governor’s plans for a phased re-opening of the economy and businesses and the guidance provided to schools. More information on summer school offerings will be available as we receive guidance from the Maine Department of Education.

As always, we appreciate the support and dedication so many of you have put into our remote learning plan. We couldn’t have accomplished all we did without you!
