Alphabetical order is one of the basic skills first and second graders need to know.  Students incorporated this skill into our Acadian lesson by looking up French family surnames in the telephone book.

Researching Names In A Telephone Book
GRADES: 1, 2, and Multiage 1 and 2 (MAC-2)

OBJECTIVES:  Using ABC order skills, students will  learn to look up last names  in a phone book.  They will learn that a telephone book is compiled in alphabetical order, has addresses as well as telephone numbers.

MATERIALS:

Multi-copies of telephone books

handout.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

1.  Working cooperatively, students will use the telephone book to find out the frequency of the names Bechards and Vaillancourt.

2.  Students will write the names, addresses and telephone numbers of 6 people they know.

3.  Lastly, students will write 9 French names from the telephone book.
